The Ministry of Agriculture in Egypt is planning to import 135 tons of potato seeds from Europe to decrease the rising seed prices, which have increased by over 44% from the previous year. The imported seeds, expected to be planted in December 2024 and harvested in summer 2025, will primarily be used for export to European and Arab markets. The high demand for potatoes and tomatoes has led farmers to double their cultivated areas, potentially causing a surge in supply and a decrease in prices. The Ministry is regulating the market and has set the seed price for small farmers at about 69.5 thousand pounds per ton.
