Italy's Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, discussed the impact of water shortages on the Italian wine sector during Senate question time. He highlighted Sicily and other southern regions as particularly affected by drought this year, while noting Piedmont's role as a leading wine region. The government's efforts to combat drought include creating a control room and appointing a commissioner with increased powers. Lollobrigida also mentioned the need for more efficient water use, as Italy only captures 11% of its water resources. The minister stressed that the government is working to support companies affected by drought and is collaborating with the MIT to improve Italy's water system efficiency. Additionally, Lollobrigida mentioned the need for Europe to coordinate efforts in addressing wine industry emergencies, such as peronospora and flavescence dorée, which are exacerbated by climate change.
