The Global Alliance against Fusarium R4T, a group aimed at combating a fungus threatening banana production, has received significant support from the World Bank. The disease, with no effective treatment, poses a risk to banana production and the income and food security of small farmers in countries like Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. The Alliance, backed by the World Bank, is developing resistant varieties, providing small producers with support and implementing biosafety systems. The World Bank has allocated US$4 billion to 247 agricultural projects for 2023, showing its commitment to the sector. The Alliance has made progress in prevention, genetic development, control methods, and political support, with over 300 farmers already receiving training.
