The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has revised up its 2020 world cereal production forecast to 2,761 million tonnes, marking a 1.9% increase from the previous year, thanks to higher-than-expected maize yields in West Africa and better wheat harvests in the European Union, Kazakhstan, and Russia. The increase is mainly due to improved production forecasts in India, Tanzania, and Iran. However, the FAO also expects the total cereal import requirements for the 51 low-income, food-deficit countries to reach 74.1 million tonnes for the 2020/21 marketing year. Furthermore, the FAO predicts a record world wheat production in 2021, with an anticipated rebound in the European Union's wheat production, increased maize plantings in South Africa, and a rise in global wheat use and cereal trade.
