In 2020, global milk production saw an increase, reaching approximately 906 million tons, with the Asian continent leading the way with the highest increase in milk production at 2.6 percent, led by India. China and Pakistan also saw significant increases in milk production. The European Union and New Zealand were the leading exporters of dairy products, while China, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Brazil were the largest importers. Exports of half and whole milk powders dominated, with a notable increase in whey exports at 8 percent, while exports of semi-skimmed milk powder and butter decreased. The global dairy price index experienced a slight decline, decreasing by 1 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, with butter seeing the most significant decrease at 13.5 percent in the first half of 2020.
