A ban on zucchini imports from Queensland has led to a significant increase in the cost of the vegetable, pushing prices to a record high of $21.42 per kilogram in June 2020, a 74% increase. The ban, in place since December, is due to the cucumber green mottle mosaic virus. As a result, New Zealand, with limited local supply, is experiencing a zucchini shortage. This has caused a 7.6% rise in overall vegetable prices in June, although this was balanced by a decrease in prices for winter crops. Over the year ending June 2020, food prices increased by 4.1%, with fruit and vegetable prices rising by 10.0%, the highest increase in over three years.
