Pumpkin producers in the Valle del Mezquital region of Hidalgo, Mexico have experienced a good harvest and favorable prices in 2021. According to producer Salvador García and data from the Secretariat of Agricultural Development of Hidalgo (SEDAGROH), over 34,000 tons of pumpkins are produced annually, primarily for distribution in Mexico City. Producers usually make two to three plantings per year, with each hectare yielding up to 1,200 boxes of 25 kilos. Despite low yield in late year due to cold weather, the positive trend in prices has offset the issue. However, García emphasized the need for more support from state authorities and stated that cultivation of vegetables like tomato, cucumber, and green bean is profitable.
