Poland imported fruits worth approximately USD 2,302 million in 2020 which was an increase of 28% compared to the previous year. A large share of these imports was made from Peru and was worth USD 65 million, 14% higher than the value recorded in 2019. Despite the pandemic, Peruvian fruit managed to break the historical record of fresh fruit exports to Poland. Avocado was the second-largest fruit imported with total shipments of 4,216 tons worth USD 3 million with a share of 16% in the market share. The avocado imports from Peru grew by 3% in volume 29% in value compared to the previous year. Peru continues to maintain its position as the largest supplier of avocado to this country even in 2021 as demand for avocados grows in Poland.
In the last few years, awareness regarding the health benefits of avocados grew in Poland and people started incorporating the superfruit more into their diet. Avocado consumption in Poland has also increased as consumers can buy this product throughout the year thanks to the imported avocados in the market. Poland imports avocados from several countries like Peru, Spain, Israel, Germany, and Austria. Peru has the largest share of 15.7% in avocado imports and it is expected to grow even more in the future as Peruvian fruits establish themselves in the market. Polish avocado imports have grown significantly in the past and are expected to grow more in the future thanks to the increasing demand and domestic consumption.

Poland’s avocado imports have grown from 8.9 thousand tons in 2015 to a whopping 25 thousand tons in 2020. Between this period, they recorded a CAGR of 18.7% and increased the volume of avocado imports from USD 22.5 million to USD 77.3 million. The country imports significant volumes of avocados throughout the year depending upon the harvest season in the origin country. Despite the recurrence of the COVID-19 outbreak, Poland’s avocado imports grew by 22.2% in the first five months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. The country imported roughly 12.2 million kilograms of avocados during this period giving a head start to the season.

The supply of imported avocados in Poland is increasing fast, but the market still has room for growth and capacity to absorb the higher volumes. The multiple uses of avocados have resulted in strong consumer demand for avocados. In the coming few months, avocado imports will likely increase further and increase the supply in the domestic markets of Poland. Currently, the avocado prices in Poland are around USD 3.13 per kilogram but with growing supply, it is expected that these prices will come down.
