In W15 in the grape landscape, Peruvian grape exports decreased by 11% YoY during 2023/24, generating revenues of USD 1.4 million. Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service reported a 13% increase in fresh fruit exports, driven by table grapes, cherries, and plums. Meanwhile, Greece faces challenges adapting to consumer preferences and market demands as seedless varieties replace the Sultana grape.

Peruvian Grape Exports Volume Decreased by 11% During the 2023/24 Season

Peru exported 562 thousand tons of fresh grapes between W35 of 2023 and W9 of 2024, generating revenues of USD 1.4 million. Despite an 11% year-over-year (YoY) reduction in volume, a 2% YoY increase in value was recorded, mainly due to increased prices. Despite increased value, the forecasted exported volume presents significant challenges, particularly in the northern region where fresh grape exports have decreased significantly. 67% of exports were concentrated in three primary markets: the United States (US) with 48% share, the Netherlands with 11% share, and Mexico with 8% share. Despite a 12% drop in volume in the US market, there was no change in value terms, suggesting stable demand. On the other hand, the Dutch market experienced a decrease in value and volume but remains a strategic market that requires special attention.

Chilean Table Grape Exports Surged During Q1-24

Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) reported a 13% increase in fresh fruit exports in Q1-24, driven by table grapes, cherries, and plums, with the Far East as the largest market. Moreover, Chile issued 60.4 thousand certificates for its fruit. These certificates ensure that Chilean fruit meets the standards of the world's most demanding markets. The US and China remain primary destinations, with cherries being a top export to China. Meanwhile, plum sales notably rose, reaching 16 million boxes in early 2024. Table grapes and blueberries were the primary exports in the US, totaling over 232 tons and 26 tons, respectively.

More Competitive Varieties Are Displacing the Sultana Grape in Greece

Greek grape growers face a dilemma as consumer preferences shift towards seedless varieties Italy and Spain introduced. While these varieties are popular in supermarkets, local producers face challenges due to their small-scale production and limited support compared to larger-scale producers of new varieties. Additionally, weather conditions and water shortages are making it increasingly difficult to cultivate the Sultana variety, leading manufacturers to replace it with more sustainable options. This transition poses challenges for growers as they adapt to changing market demands and environmental conditions.
