W17 Sesame Update: Inventory at China’s Huangdao Port Increased YoY, WTO Launches Project to Improve Quality of Nigeria's Cowpea and Sesame Products

In W17 in the sesame seed landscape, China’s sesame inventory reached 216.4 thousand mt on April 24, 2024, showing a WoW increase of 2.27%. The inventory output increased by 1.4% WoW, while the inventory input decreased by 19.7% WoW. In addition, the WTO has launched a USD 1.2 million project to improve the quality of Nigeria's cowpea and sesame exports by enhancing their value chains, supporting safety and quality certification, and improving agricultural practices.

Sesame Seed Inventory at China’s Huangdao Port Reached 216.4 Thousand mt on April 24

As of April 24, 2024, the sesame seed inventory at Huangdao Port in China increased by 2.27% week-over-week (WoW), 14.3% month-over-month (MoM), and 4.95% year-over-year (YoY), totaling 216.4 thousand metric tons (mt). From April 18 to April 24, inventory output rose by 1.4% WoW and 7.94% MoM to 16.06 thousand mt, but decreased by 28.15% YoY. Meanwhile, inventory input for the same period decreased by 19.7% WoW and 24.64% MoM to 21.06 thousand mt, yet increased by 14.5% YoY. Despite the rise in inventories and low demand, prices are expected to remain high due to the costly sourcing.

WTO Aims to Improve Quality of Nigeria's Cowpea and Sesame Products Quality

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has launched a project valued at USD 1.2 million to improve the export quality of Nigeria's cowpea and sesame products. The project will last three years and aims to enhance the integrity of Nigeria's cowpea and sesame value chains. The initiative will support international safety and quality certification for cowpeas and sesame in Nigeria and improve agricultural practices such as pesticide application, hygiene techniques, and harvest and post-harvest methods. The initiative will also include training sessions for local food safety advisers.
