
In W29 in the tuna landscape, Vietnam's tuna imports have experienced a significant decline of 34% over the past five months of 2023. The average price of these imported tuna stood at USD 6.39/kg during this period. Furthermore, the tuna export value in Jun-23 reached nearly USD 65 million, a decrease of 28% year-over-year (YoY). The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reported a 46% YoY decrease in exports of fresh, frozen, and high-value dried tuna products. However, exports of processed and canned tuna products have seen a 4% YoY increase, reaching nearly $175 million, mainly due to price increases.
Vietnam's tuna exports to Japan decreased 31% YoY in Jun-23, reaching over USD 3 million. In 2023, turnover decreased 10% to nearly USD 17 million in the first of of 2023. The yen currency depreciation restricts seafood consumption, including tuna. Vietnamese tuna exports to Canada also experienced a significant decline of 54% in Jun-23, posing challenges for the industry. In addition, tuna exports to the US decreased 48%, reaching nearly USD 26 million in Jun-23, while the value of these exports is only half of the previous year which is USD 143 million. In contrast to the US market, Vietnamese tuna exports to the European Union (EU) have grown steadily in the past two months, with a total value of over USD 12 million in Jun-23. This growth represents a 28% increase compared to May-23. Vietnam's tuna exports to the EU are expected to slow down due to the nearly depleted import quota for canned and frozen tuna.
Lastly, it was reported that in 2022, France's tuna imports increased by 21.9%, reaching a total value of USD 99.34 million. South Korea remained the top destination for French tuna imports, accounting for almost half of the total exports, with USD 47.7 million worth of tuna imported to Korea, a significant 33.7% YoY increase.
