China

South Africa Lemon Exports to China (Feb 8)

In 2022, China and South Africa adopted new protocols for South African exports which resulted in a total of 7.5K MT of lemons being exported in 2022 compared to 800MT in 2021. The new cold treatment protocols for lemons resulted in lemons arriving in the market with good quality. As lemons are sensitive to cold treatment, these new measures bode well for the arrival of high quality lemons, which in general translates to an improved market share of South African lemons in China.

New Zealand

Shortage of Lemons in New Zealand Supermarkets (Jan 31)

In New Zealand, many fruit and vegetables are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain due to delays in the transport of imported products. There is a shortage of lemons in supermarkets across New Zealand due to delays in the shipment of the off-season fruit, while heavy rains have affected the early domestic summer harvest.

Uzbekistan

According to the State Statistics Committee, from January to October 2022, Uzbekistan supplied 3.3KT of lemons worth USD 3.6M to 8 countries. The volume of deliveries decreased by 362T compared to the same period in 2022. The primary importers of citrus fruits were Russia (2.2KT exported), Kazakhstan (759T), and Kyrgyzstan (392T). Spain

Lemon Market From January 16-22, 2023 in Spain (Jan 31)

The Spanish Fino lemons entered the second half of its campaign in W3, with a level of supply that remains slightly below average due to the lower harvest, which also allows for some tension. However, some elements cause concern: above all the decline in exports and the volume sent to the industry, which ultimately means fewer lemons harvested and possibly offsets the drop in capacity. All fruits and vegetables exhibit the post-covid trend of decreasing consumption, and data show a general decline in all products.
