Pome Fruit Production in Canada Projected to Grow for the 2022/23 Season (Dec 20)
The Canadian pome fruit production is forecasted to increase for the 2022/23 campaign as production is set to rebound from adverse weather conditions from the previous season. Canada’s apple production is expected to increase by 4% YoY, while pear production is forecasted to grow by 15% following a bumper crop in Ontario and British Columbia. However, table grape production is expected to be reduced by 5% YoY on decreasing lower yields. As a result of the production changes, notable trends in the Canadian pome fruit trade are also expected, particularly in the US.

The Plenary of the DOC Rioja Regulatory Council approved on December 19 to increase the agency's budgets for next year by 1.63% compared to those of 2022. The Union of Farmers and Ranchers of La Rioja has voted against said proposal when considering that in the context of low prices for grapes, in many cases without even covering production costs. They indicated that budgets should not be increased but, if anything, reduced.
The Community of Farmers and Ranchers of Almendralejo (CLYGAL) asked for a review of the liquidations of the grapes destined for cava production. They consider wineries have already seen their expectations fulfilled, while farmers are not being paid fairly.

Colombia
Throughout W50, the prices of Colombian red globe grapes increased in 16 of the 17 domestic markets where the product was available. Merchants reported that this behavior was due to reduced harvest in the areas of cultivation of Yumbo, La Unión (Valle del Cauca), and to the increase in the commercialization of the fruit during W50. For example, in Manizales, the price ranged at USD 1.81/kg, 20.42% more than W49. The demand for imported red globes grapes is rising due to the lack of availability for Christmas.

Strikes in Peru Are Already Leading to Shortages of Red Seedless Grapes in Germany (Dec 20)
The overseas grape season is getting off to a relatively slow start this year. The current strikes in Peru have led to supply bottlenecks, especially for red seedless grapes in Germany. Therefore, there is an urgent search for products, which makes prices very high. Meanwhile, the arriving ships from South Africa are also experiencing significant delays due to strikes, Matthias, director of Fresh-Connection Fruchtimport, outlined. This means that by the time the products finally reach the market, the Christmas trade is more or less over.
