[Reporter Hong Lan of the Korean Farmers and Fishermen Newspaper] In a corner of Gusung-ri, Gusung-myeon, Gangneung-si, cabbage fields that failed to be harvested last summer due to an extreme drought followed by heavy rains remain as they are. Cabbage that lost its commercial value could neither be sold nor pulled out due to its worthlessness, left in the fields, silently testifying to the passage of time in that summer's farming. Gusung-ri village head An Hyuk-rae, whom we met at the site on the 15th, recalled, "The drought continued for a long period, and the heat was extremely severe," and "There was a day when Gangneung Gusung-myeon recorded 39.6 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature in the country." Last summer, Gangneung-si experienced an extreme drought that affected household water use.
