France is grappling with an outbreak of a new type of bluetongue disease (BTV), with 41 cases confirmed in six departments in northern France as of August 14. The disease, which is not transmissible to humans, has spread from the Netherlands to several other European countries, including Belgium, Germany, the UK, Luxembourg, and Denmark. The Dutch authorities have reported over 3,800 outbreaks. The disease causes symptoms such as fever, respiratory problems, and loss of pregnant young in animals. While not leading to slaughter, as avian flu does, it can result in death. A 150-kilometer restriction zone has been implemented to limit the spread of the virus. A vaccination campaign has been initiated in northern France.
