iFood: Brazilians Love Burgers on Weekends
According to data released by iFood, Brazilians ordered approximately 250 million burgers on the platform in 2024, a 207% increase from 2023, equivalent to 475 burgers delivered per minute. So far this year, burger sales on the platform have maintained strong growth, with 72 million burgers ordered in the first four months, representing a 12% year-on-year increase.
Data shows that from January to April, restaurant burger delivery orders increased by 8 million compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, sales of semi-prepared burgers in supermarkets saw an even more dramatic surge, skyrocketing 237% year-on-year. The top three states for restaurant burger orders are all in southeastern Brazil: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. For semi-prepared burger sales, the top three states are São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Pernambuco.
Moreover, burgers are Brazilians' weekend favorite. iFood noted that the platform's highest burger order days last year were Sunday (over 39 million), Saturday (over 37 million), and Friday (nearly 33 million).
Beatriz Pentagna, iFood's Business Marketing Director, stated that the surge in restaurant burger orders, especially during weekend hours, demonstrates Brazilians' increasing preference for enjoying burgers at home or during leisure time. She also mentioned that Brazilian burger consumption trends extend far beyond traditional fast food, with variations including plant-based, low-carb burgers, and burgers made with chicken, shrimp, salmon, tuna, sushi, pork, picanha, lamb, and even sausage.
Pentagna also noted that by April this year, 2,630 new burger establishments had joined iFood, with 99% being small and medium-sized enterprises, further proving the burger industry's important role in driving entrepreneurship and regional economic development.
