Starting June 7, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan has imposed a temporary ban on the import of tomato and pepper fruits from Turkmenistan due to the detection of quarantine organisms in these fruits. This decision was made after 19 cases of the tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) were found in tomatoes imported from Turkmenistan, despite phytosanitary certificates. Despite notifications of these violations, no information on the cause of the virus in exported products was provided by the authorized bodies of Turkmenistan. The ban aims to prevent the spread of the virus in Kazakhstan, as over 1,300 violations of plant quarantine legislation have been detected since the beginning of the year, preventing the import of 11,000 tons of regulated products that did not meet quarantine phytosanitary requirements.
