Farmers in various regions are experiencing significant drops in corn yields, between 20% and 40%, due to extreme dry heat and underground water depletion caused by persistent drought. This has led to average yields of 1,000 to 1,200 kg per hectare, a decrease from last year's 1,400 to 1,700 kg. The situation is particularly severe in Drama, Kavala, and Serres, where many fields were unfirmed and even those that were irrigated struggle with yields of 1,000 to 1,100 kg. Despite efforts to irrigate using costly energy-intensive methods, farmers could not obtain a yield of more than 900 kg per hectare. The geotechnical advisor to the primary sector in Eastern Macedonia has requested an exception from the conditions for linked aid this year due to these climate-related challenges. The losses are expected to impact not only corn producers but also livestock and other processing sectors.
