The pollack, squid, mackerel that reach our tables, and tuna, an export item, are not just simple foods. They are the core of South Korea's food security and a solid pillar responsible for providing protein to our citizens. However, this pillar is currently shaking. The distant-water fishing industry, once called a 'export powerhouse' that drove South Korea's economic growth, is losing its competitiveness and facing the crisis of sinking due to aging vessels, regulation-focused domestic related laws, and fierce international regulations. Therefore, the Korea Distant-Water Fisheries Association held a meeting at the National Assembly four days ago regarding the distant-water fishing industry.
