The Russian market has a significant issue with counterfeit cognac products, with estimates suggesting that 60-70% of the market is fake. The counterfeits are produced with various violations of the standard cognac production technology, including the use of wrong raw materials, overestimation of aging periods, and the addition of substances not typical for cognac. According to the Federal Customs Service, the situation has slightly improved from 60.2% in 2023 to 59.3% in 2024, but if you exclude producers caught counterfeiting, the rate rises to 80.5%. The service believes that the current GOST standards for cognac are inadequate and need to be updated based on customs expert methodologies to effectively identify and prevent counterfeit cognacs.
