Accelerating the creation of high-income fishery resources such as octopus in South Korea

The Jeonnam Provincial Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science recently announced that it had released 200,000 self-produced young octopus seeds into the waters of four cities and counties. The young octopuses released this time are seeds obtained from mature mothers in Jeonnam waters and hatched and grown for about a month in an artificial spawning farm at the Resource Creation Research Institute. Octopus, which lives in the shallow coastal waters of the West and South Seas, is a sessile aquatic organism that grows to around 12cm in one year after being released. The recent production of octopus in Korea is 2,204 tons in 2023. Among these, production in the Jeonnam region is 383 tons, accounting for about 17% of the entire country. The price is about 50,000 to 60,000 won per 13 fish per kg, and it is the main income-earning variety for fishermen in coastal waters of Jeollanam-do.
