China has started allowing the import of Belarusian rapeseed and soybean meal, as part of a strategy to diversify its protein sources and reduce dependence on a single supply source. This comes as China has been increasing its protein imports and liberalizing imports of meal from countries like India, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Russia. Despite the small volume of Belarusian soybean and rapeseed meal exports compared to Chinese imports, it is seen as a new source that could complement existing imports. China is also researching ways to produce protein from carbon monoxide and promoting mixed sowing and the expansion of soybean cultivation domestically.
