In mid-June, Nepal witnessed a significant surge in the prices of various vegetables, with cherry tomatoes seeing the highest increase of 101.52%, followed by Indian cabbage at 30.05%, round pumpkin at 30.77%, okra at 28.57%, and pointed gourds at 36.36%. This price hike contributed to an overall year-on-year vegetable inflation rate of 16.02%. However, the rise in vegetable prices and the introduction of advanced food packaging technologies have led to a decrease in the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables among Nepalese people. The "2024 Global Food Policy Report" also highlighted that the consumption of salty and fried snacks in Nepal exceeds 40%, which is above the average for other South Asian countries.
