Africa's wheat industry is facing challenges due to climate change, unfavorable trade policies, and disrupted global supply chains, especially due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The continent relies heavily on imports to meet its wheat consumption needs, but these imports have become more expensive and challenging due to the conflict. Climate change and civil conflicts in countries like Sudan and Ethiopia have also impacted wheat production in Africa. In response, countries like Egypt, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and Sudan are implementing initiatives to mitigate the effects of climate change on wheat production and achieve self-sufficiency. These efforts include expanding irrigated wheat farming, adopting new crop varieties, and increasing efficiency in water use for wheat production.
