Agave producers in Jalisco, Mexico, have protested outside the Tequila Regulatory Council over the significant drop in agave prices, which has fallen from 30 to two pesos per kilo. This decline is perceived to be orchestrated by large transnational producers to pressure small producers and potentially displace them. The producers are urgently seeking the council's intervention to establish fair prices and to protect the authenticity of tequila, as they fear the expansion of the product in other countries due to the export of blue agave offshoots. However, the Tequila Regulatory Council has clarified that it lacks the authority to set agave or tequila prices and is solely responsible for overseeing the production process of tequila.
