08.10.2021 | 16:31:00 | ID: 31153 | Department: Agriculture | Agricultural Policy Berlin (agrar-PR) - Federal Minister Klöckner and her colleagues discuss fishing in the Baltic Sea, the preparation of the CAP strategic plans, the EU forest strategy and the “Fit for 55” climate protection package started fishing in the Baltic Sea.
Due to the deteriorating stocks of western cod and western herring, the Commission's proposal envisages closing down the directed fisheries for these two fish species in 2022. Federal Minister Julia Klöckner: “This is undoubtedly an extreme burden for our German Baltic Sea fisheries. The stocks of western cod and salmon are extremely critical. However, Germany is working to ensure that sufficient by-catches of cod are earmarked for the flatfish fishery. The flatfish population has developed positively and would allow a higher catch. In our view of the western herring in the Baltic Sea, a prerequisite for a stock recovery is that resolute measures are taken to protect this stock in the Skagerrak / Kattegat as well. The drastic cuts for fishermen in the Baltic Sea will otherwise have no effect. That is why we advocate that the decision on western herring should not be made until the December Council.
