The Directorate General for Health, Agri-Food Production and Animal Welfare of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) of Spain has reported a total of 60 outbreaks of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses and 9 in wild birds since the beginning of 2024. This follows 38 and 8 outbreaks in horses, and 9 in birds, reported in the previous years. Europe-wide, there have been 751 WNV outbreaks reported from the start of 2024, with 402 of these in horses and 349 in birds, with Spain confirming 114 cases in humans.
