The head of the Sugar and Integrated Industries Company in Egypt, Major General Essam Al-Budaiwi, has called for increased oversight of black honey and juice factories ahead of the 2023 cane season due to their higher purchase prices from farmers, which impacts government supply quantities. These factories are planning to pay 2,000 pounds per ton, significantly more than the government's 1,100 pounds. The government has also increased its receipt price for sugar cane from farmers to 1,100 pounds per ton. Al-Budaiwi has advocated for measures to halt the operation of cane juicers and honey factories during the harvest season, and for a regulation requiring landowners to supply a fixed share of their crop to the state. He highlighted that most of the 50 factories in the market are unlicensed and contribute to reduced government supplies and increased import volumes of raw sugar.
