Algeria is dynamically entering the cultivation of corn and oilseeds

Algeria currently imports 100% of its corn and oilseed needs. In total, it allocates 3.24 billion euros annually to import these products. To reduce this dependence on imports, the Algerian government has launched a strategic program to develop these crops in the country. The program, which will begin in March 2025, foresees the development of a total area of 5,200,000 hectares of corn and oilseed crops (sunflower, rapeseed and soybean) by 2028. In her statements, Ms. Hanane Labiad, Director of Development and Promotion of Agricultural Products at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, emphasized that the country “has the farmers, the agricultural land and the water resources necessary to develop these crops.” She described the strategic crop development program as an “ambitious project” that aims to ensure the country’s food security.
