The Advisory Council for Regional Development in the Greater La Plata region has recommended restrictions on the import of tomatoes from Chile to prevent the reintroduction of the Pepino Mosaic Potexvirus (PepMV), a virus that was eradicated in Argentina forty years ago. The concern stemmed from the prevalence of this virus in tomato crops in Chile, which could potentially affect local crops of tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and other vegetables. The PepMV can affect not only tomatoes and cucumbers but also potatoes, peppers, and eggplants and can survive in weeds. There is no effective chemical treatment for the virus, and prevention is the only strategy. The Council is advocating for these restrictions to safeguard the production of the fruit and vegetable belt of La Plata and other regions from the introduction of foreign pests through uncontrolled imports.
