The European Commission has lifted the ban on pork exports and the rearing of live animals in certain areas of Sardinia, Italy, following a decade-long restriction due to African Swine Fever (ASF). This decision, praised by EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, acknowledges Italy's efforts in controlling the disease and shows that the EU's containment strategies have been effective. Despite the progress, ASF remains prevalent in 11 Member States, including mainland Italy. The number of outbreaks in Sardinia has significantly decreased thanks to initiatives like wild boar culls and the implementation of post-inspection recommendations, leading to the easing of restrictions for some areas. The updates to the EU regulation, effective from January, mark a milestone in the fight against ASF in Sardinia.
