Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), also known as Turkey Viral Rhinotracheitis or Swollen Head Syndrome, is spreading in Ontario, Canada, and across North America. The highly contagious respiratory disease has been reported in 12 counties in Ontario, with no specific control programs or vaccines available. The disease was recently detected in the US, with scientists studying the genetics of the new strain. A paper has been published on the comparison of molecular diagnostic tests for aMPV with commercial kits, finding similar capabilities.
