(Daejeon=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Joo-young = The Korea National Arboretum announced on the 5th that the National Baekdu-daegan Arboretum has successfully decoded the chloroplast genomes of six species of Miscanthus.
The Korea National Arboretum has been conducting research to collect and conserve native crop wild relatives (CWR) within forests as part of the 'Support for Securing and Utilizing Native Crop Wild Relatives in Forests' project, a research and development task of the Korea Forest Service and the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute, since 2021. The goal is to use them as breeding materials and biomaterials for food crops.
The Baekdu-daegan Arboretum succeeded in decoding the chloroplast genomes of six species of Miscanthus, which are genetically close to sugarcane: Miscanthus sinensis, Miscanthus floridulus, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Miscanthus tenuissimus, Miscanthus lutarioriparius, and Miscanthus condensatus.
In particular, the chloroplast genome information of Miscanthus tenuissimus, Miscanthus lutarioriparius, and Miscanthus condensatus has been revealed for the first time.
The genetic information of these chloroplast genomes has been registered with the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) of the United States' World Gene Bank (GenBank) and the National Biodata Station (K-BDS).
