Bangladesh has the potential to produce corn oil, which could help the country reduce its dependence on edible oil imports, according to Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque. The country's maize production has been increasing due to rising demand, primarily for poultry, fish, and animal feeds. The minister urged the private sector to invest in corn oil production, which could help reduce the cost of imported edible oil and provide a nutrition-rich oil. The Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI) can produce 0.12 million tonnes of corn oil, generating Tk 40 billion. BWMRI Director General Dr Israil Hossen mentioned that 5.4 million tonnes of maize was produced domestically and 95% of it was used in the feed industry. Corn oil is healthier than other cooking oils as it has no protein, carbohydrate, and contains almost 100% fat, with more Vitamin K and Vitamin E than sunflower oil.
