Bangladesh leads in rice productivity among neighboring countries and is close to the global average in potato productivity, according to a report. The country's rice productivity has tripled due to low-cost fertilizers, high-quality seeds, and new varieties, making it self-sufficient in rice production. However, wheat production is lagging behind the global average. Bangladesh also tops in agricultural efficiency among 41 Asian countries, with 98% efficiency, but there is potential to increase productivity by 2%. The government is focusing on crops with lower productivity to increase efficiency through the distribution of free fertilizers, seeds, and promoting new varieties and agricultural mechanization.
