Due to a recent ban on onion exports from India, the Bangladesh government has allowed local traders to import the product from ten other countries, leading to a sufficient supply of early season varieties on the domestic market and a containment of the sharp price increase. Bangladesh expects to import onions from China, Egypt, Myanmar, Netherlands, Pakistan, Qatar, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the US, with shipments already arriving from some of these countries. However, Bangladeshi onion traders are hesitant to use the import permits received from the government, leading to a lower demand and a return to previous onion prices in some areas of Dhaka.
