British Columbia Premier David Eby has announced a series of measures to support fruit growers following the sudden shutdown of BC Tree Fruits Co-operative. The measures include increasing compensation from the AgriStability program to cover up to 90% of losses and doubling the cap for farmers across the province. The government is also establishing a more proactive program to provide funding for tree-fruit farmers to build resiliency against extreme weather. Additionally, the government is offering supports to adversely affected workers in the tree-fruit sector and is considering purchasing the co-op's assets to preserve them for farmers. Eby has also urged the federal government to match the provincial funding and addressed the issue of subsidized Washington apples undercutting BC growers.
