In February, Brazilian beef exports saw a 16% decrease compared to the same month last year, totaling 152,280 tons, primarily due to suspension of imports by China following a case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). This resulted in a 27.5% decrease in China's purchases of Brazilian beef in February compared to January. Despite this, the first two months of 2023 saw a 22.6% increase in Chinese imports of Brazilian beef, though the price fell by 4.2%. Other major markets, including the United States and Chile, also reduced their purchases of Brazilian beef.
