Beekeepers protest in front of the EC Representation in Spain against massive imports of fake honey

This Tuesday, January 28, Spanish beekeepers gathered in front of the office of the European Commission Representation in Spain against massive imports of fake honey. They also demanded more controls on imported honey as well as greater traceability and better labeling of the product. Similar events have been held in Paris and Lisbon. Called by the agricultural organizations COAG and Unión de Uniones, with the support of Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias de España, the protesters have come from various parts of the country to denounce the situation in which the sector finds itself and express their perception that the Commission has abandoned them. The head of the beekeeping sector at COAG, Pedro Manuel Loscertales, has assured that a 2023 report from the same Commission recognized that "46% of the honey circulating in Europe is alleged fraud," for which reason he has demanded "greater border controls and greater traceability," with validated analysis methods.
