Belgian fruit growers have protested against the low prices they receive for their apples, arguing that they cannot cover production costs. The protest, which involved around 40 tractors in front of the Belgian trade federation Cameos, was supported by the Flemish Minister of Agriculture. The growers have highlighted the high margins of supermarkets and are calling for a fair distribution of profits. This comes at a time when Belgium is facing a difficult situation in the fruit industry, with reports of mass grubbing-up of orchards and sorted apples being the cheapest in the EU.
