In 2022, Mato Grosso (MT) saw a 4.66% growth in its cattle herd, now accounting for 14.8% of Brazil's national herd and making it home to nine cattle per person. The state's municipalities, including Cáceres, Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade, Juara, Juína, and Alta Floresta, are major contributors to this growth. In November of the same year, a massive vaccination drive against foot-and-mouth disease saw 33.5 million cattle and buffaloes in the state being immunized. Owing to the effective animal health control measures in place, Mato Grosso has been authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture to halt the vaccination for this disease, with the goal of achieving 'foot-and-mouth disease-free' certification without the need for vaccination.
