In early 2022, Brazil experienced a significant decrease in dairy product imports, with a 23.3% drop from December 2021 to January 2022 and a 51.6% drop compared to January 2021, totaling 8.7 thousand tons. This decline is attributed to low domestic demand and high international prices. Powdered milk and cheese imports from Argentina and Uruguay saw the most significant reduction. Despite a slight decrease in total exports, which stood at 3.4 thousand tons, powdered milk exports to Algeria saw a notable increase. The dairy trade balance in January 2022 showed a deficit of US$ 21.5 million, a decrease of 32.3% from the previous month.
