The Jangheung County in South Jeolla Province, a major domestic log-grown shiitake mushroom production area, is contributing to increased farm income by developing and distributing region-specific bread, alternative meat, and sandwich cookies using shiitake mushrooms. The project is led by the Jangheung Mushroom Industry Research Institute, which has drawn attention by developing new varieties (Heunghwa 1 and 2), establishing a fungal bio-health new material commercialization support center, and building a shiitake mushroom smart farm demonstration support complex. Mun Jeong-geol, director of the Jangheung Mushroom Industry Research Institute, stated that it is the "only shiitake mushroom specialized research institution under local governments nationwide" and has been operating breeding and functionality research laboratories, processing industry research laboratories, and fungal commercialization research facilities since its establishment in 2006.
