Ghana has launched its first biotech crop, the Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) Cowpea, named 'Songotra T', developed to combat the Maruca vitrata pest. This milestone follows 12 years of research by CSIR-SARI in collaboration with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation. Approved by the National Seed Council and the National Biosafety Authority, the PBR Cowpea aims to improve yields and reduce pesticide use, addressing health and environmental concerns. The development, led by Dr. Jerry Nboyine, underscores Ghana's commitment to agricultural biotechnology and food security. Public education and transparent communication are emphasized as crucial for gaining public trust and acceptance.
