Long An province in Vietnam has imposed fines for 14 cases of illegal conversion of salt water ponds to freshwater for vannamei shrimp farming, covering over 10 hectares and totaling over 144 million VND in fines. The province is also looking into 62 similar cases and 52 illegal drilling cases for shrimp farming. Despite the high profits, the province has advised farming households to cease vannamei farming due to its negative environmental impact. The province is encouraging farmers to shift to more sustainable aquaculture practices.
