Since gaining market access in China in 2021, Cambodian mango exports have run into difficulties, with challenges such as pandemic-related border restrictions and cargo delays. Despite starting strong, with China importing 4,771 tons in 2021, making it the third-largest international market after Vietnam and Thailand, recent optimism has waned due to issues including quarantine policies, container and shipping availability, border closures, and strong regional competition. Factors such as China's self-sufficiency in mango production, limited heat treatment capacity, inadequate cold chain infrastructure, and lack of buyer connections in China further hinder Cambodia's export growth.
