The Ministry of Agricultural Policies has initiated the process to obtain a protected geographical indication (PGI) for 'oil Campania' extra virgin olive oil, following the publication of the production specification in the Official Gazette. In 60 days, any oppositions must be submitted, after which the dossier will be forwarded to the European Commission. This move aims to enhance the product's visibility and distinctiveness on both national and international markets. The PGI would allow the exclusive use of 18 specific olive varieties, with room for up to 15% of other varieties. This initiative is expected to bolster the protection of native varieties and support olive growers in Campania, one of Italy's leading olive-producing regions.
