Canada will thresh less durum wheat this year, what is forecast for corn

Canada is the fourth largest exporter of wheat in the world. Canadian farmers will harvest less durum wheat than expected, as we have less acreage and dry heat conditions in most parts of the country have reduced yields per acre. This is stated by the National Statistics Office of Canada (StatsCan) in a report published on 8/29/2023. Specifically, the areas harvested for durum wheat, which is used in the production of pasta (and exports mainly to Italy), are expected to be reduced, by 1.5%, to 5.8 million hectares, while yields are expected to decrease, by 25.3 %, to 26.8 bushels per acre. This will contribute to lower production of durum wheat (-26.4% to 4.3 million tons). Production of spring wheat, used for baking, looks set to fall by 14.5% to 22.1 million tonnes. Spring wheat yields are expected to decline 19.9% to 42.6 bushels per acre, while planted area is expected to increase 6.9% to 19.1 million acres. Corn production is expected to increase in Canada.
