Climate change has led to a significant decrease in cardamom production in Nepal, with the country expecting to produce approximately 4,000 tons this year, a 20% drop from the previous year. This marks the third year of consecutive decline in production, which was around 9,000 tons three years ago. The current selling price of cardamom in Nepal is 2,750 rupees per kilogram, up from 2,250 rupees per kilogram last fiscal year. The chairman of the Nepal Cardamom Entrepreneurs Association has suggested that expanding the planting area and increasing production could help the industry experience a price increase, with potential for an additional 25,000 tons of production.
