The European Court of Human Rights has ruled in favor of banning animal sacrifice in halal and kosher rituals, which involves bleeding the animal to death. This decision contradicts existing laws that permit animal sacrifice for religious rites and now puts the onus on member state governments to enforce the ban. However, importing meat from animals slaughtered using these methods is still allowed. The ruling comes amidst data showing that in Catalonia, 50% of lambs and 40% of calves were slaughtered using halal methods in 2020, with 4.3% of the population identifying as Muslim. The Business Federation of Meat and Meat Industries (FECIC) has yet to comment on these statistics.
